Talent (by B. Lynn Goodwin)

Fifteen-and- a-half year old Sandee Mason wants to find her talent, get her driver’s

license, and stop living in the shadow of her big brother, Bri, who disappeared in

Afghanistan. She auditions for the school’s production of Oklahoma! but is assigned to

the job of assistant stage manager, working with her brother’s best friend, Rob Cooper,

who fights his loneliness with beer. Sandee often hears Bri encouraging her to “go for

it.” After the Army tells the Masons they’ve located Bri’s remains, Sandee asks a psychic

to find out what other messages he has for her. When the principal, Doctor Henderson,

asks her to talk to the student body about Bri, she comes into her own as a calm,

collected speaker, and later that day she rescues Rob, who stormed off campus after he

got kicked out of the assembly. He goes to juvenile hall and she becomes the school’s

youngest stage manager.
